About Modern Sculptures and Furniture

So what are these fascinating pieces? Where did they come from?

Auguste Rodin was a late 19th-century artist who is generally considered to have begun the modern sculpture movement. Rodin created a new way of constructing his works by softening the hard outline of the prevailing, traditionalist styles. There were also other artists, such as Paul Gauguin and Edgar Degas, who also experimented with their artistic visions, and together these artists invented a previously unheard of style in sculpture. Some classic representations of these works include Auguste Rodin’s “The Burghers of Calais” and Paul Gauguin’s “Oviri.”

The term “modern furniture” refers to pieces such as dining tables, side tables, chairs, chests, sofas, and others that were influenced by modernism, and were produced between the late 19th century and the present. The aesthetic influences on these works include a desire for practicality and a cutting of excess, which, compared to all the furniture that had gone before it, was a wild departure from the norm. Some iconic examples of this style include Gerrit Rietveld’s Red-Blue Armchair, Eileen Gray’s side table, and the Noguchi coffee table.
